From Mary: Looking back, looking ahead
It’s 7:30AM in Brussels (same time zone as Rwanda-6 hrs ahead of Eastern time). So far, we’ve been traveling for 15 hours since leaving the village and have a 4 hour layover followed by an 8 hour flight to JFK. We’re all sitting in the airport with laptops and blackberrys fired up…what DID we do before technology?! We’ve begun processing thru all we experienced at the Village…with the kids,...
From Steve: I know what hope looks like
I’m writing this on the plane from Brussels to JFK … the last leg of the trip (I’ll post it when I get home). The four of us have been doing a lot of reminiscing today about some of the most touching moments and some of our funniest moments. This was a great group to travel with. We all share a common work ethic … and each have a great sense of humor. The ASYV was built to deal with one...
From Jeff: An Amazing Experience
This week has been an amazing experience. Next to my wedding and the birth of my kids this the most heartfelt week I’ve ever had. The last few days were just as busy and packed minute-by-minute. Sunday, the Liquidnet team took the day to explore the country side. This helped us to decompress- we so needed to. We had listened to many heartfelt emotional stories that always included the most...
from Amanda: Winding down our journey
Greetings from Brussels. We are en route to JFK after a terrific last day at the village. Steve and I started the day with a jolt of VIA in our house, then headed up to breakfast just in time to see the kids make there way up the hill to school. Tuesday was their first day of final exams - two a day thru next Tuesday. Most of the kids said they were prepared and some were even excited for...
From Steve: I LOVE You ... I HATE You!
It’s Monday afternoon in the village and I’m finding myself with a few minutes of downtime … so time to blog. Today has been a really great day. Amanda and I headed out early to have breakfast with the kids. I was hoping to get up a little early to have time to heat some water for a shower … but my alarm didn’t go off. I happened to wake up on my own but didn’t have enough time to heat the...
Amanda: Sunday in Rwanda
I think I want to start off every blog post with, “Today was wonderful”….and it’s true! But today was different for us then the others - almost like a “day off”. After another night of just 4 hours of sleep we woke extra early today to leave by 6am to get to Akagera National Park.
The drive there was amazing in itself - people are up EARLY in Rwanda - and out...
From Jeff: How is it possible?
How is it possible after going through the most horrible events possible that the kids and staff can find the strength to ever love or trust again? I ask myself that pretty much every second i am here. Amazingly, there is more love in this Village then i’ve ever seen. The last few days have been a worldwind. I am happy to say the offsite was a huge success!! Amanda, Mary and Steve were...
from Amanda: so much to share, so little time
It’s amazing how busy we’ve been. It’s now after midnight and we’ve been sitting in front of our computers since about 8 or 9pm. First we were winding down our final day from the Leadership Seminar. Then we skyped home, but that takes a LONG time - connection to the internet was really sporadic today - until Nir reset the router which is up at the water tower. ...
From Steve: We'll Sleep on the Plane
“We’ll sleep on the plane.” That phrase has become pretty popular amongst the 5 of us (now including Anne). Friday night was PACKED … and truly wonderful. We’re doing our best to keep the blog up to date (especially with photos) so you may have read a lot of what we’ve been up to … but I wanted to give my own update on some of it.
I started this update on Saturday morning but...
From Amanda: a quick "work" update
So, we have been SO busy that it’s hard to have the time to do real blog updates. My iphone allows me to post pictures “real time” but I would love to have some time to really capture what is going on with us here at ASYV. First of all, from my standpoint, being a participant/facilitator in the “Liquidnet/ASYV Leadership Conference” has been a great experience for...
From Amanda: a word about the showers
When we say the showers are cold, what we mean is that, literally, no water comes out of the hot tap. None. I showered today. :)
A special shout out to the Starbucks gang for inventing VIA right before our trip. :)
Mary: link to photos so you can experience it all...
I hope this works! I obviously have zero self control when it comes to snapping photos of the beauty that prevails here…both the country, the people and most especially the children. We are all very grateful to Anne for making this come to life.
